Acupuncture for Arthritis Cairns

Acupuncture for Arthritis Cairns

Acupuncture is a popular and effective natural treatment for managing arthritis pain and inflammation. It works by stimulating specific points on the body to promote circulation, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain, all of which are critical in treating various forms of arthritis. In Cairns, where holistic health treatments are embraced, many people seek out acupuncture as a non-invasive way to manage arthritis symptoms, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life.

Conditions Acupuncture Treats for Arthritis:

  1. Osteoarthritis (OA): The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage in the joints wears down, leading to pain, stiffness, and limited movement. Acupuncture is effective in reducing joint pain and improving mobility by stimulating the body’s natural pain-relief mechanisms and reducing inflammation in the affected joints.

  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation in the joints and surrounding tissues, leading to severe pain and swelling. Acupuncture helps by modulating the immune system and reducing inflammatory responses, making it an ideal complementary therapy for managing RA symptoms.

  3. Psoriatic Arthritis: Acupuncture can help manage pain and inflammation associated with psoriatic arthritis, which often affects those with psoriasis. By enhancing blood circulation and reducing systemic inflammation, acupuncture can alleviate joint pain and stiffness in individuals with this condition.

  4. Gout: Gout is a type of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to severe pain, especially in the big toe. Acupuncture helps reduce the frequency and intensity of gout attacks by improving circulation and regulating metabolic processes in the body.

  5. Ankylosing Spondylitis: This form of arthritis primarily affects the spine, causing pain and stiffness. Acupuncture is used to reduce spinal inflammation, ease stiffness, and improve flexibility, making it a valuable treatment for those with ankylosing spondylitis.

Why People in Cairns Seek Acupuncture for Arthritis:

  • Active Outdoor Lifestyle: Cairns is known for its outdoor activities, such as hiking and water sports, which can put strain on the joints. Locals and tourists often turn to acupuncture to manage arthritis pain, allowing them to continue enjoying these activities with less discomfort.

  • Chronic Pain Relief: Many individuals with chronic arthritis pain seek out acupuncture in Cairns as a drug-free, natural alternative to pain medications. Acupuncture provides long-lasting relief without the side effects of pharmaceutical treatments.

  • Non-Invasive Treatment: Residents in Cairns, who favor holistic and non-invasive health treatments, often choose acupuncture as a natural way to manage arthritis without resorting to surgery or prescription drugs.

  • Stress and Pain Management: Arthritis can be mentally exhausting, and stress can exacerbate symptoms. Acupuncture not only alleviates physical pain but also promotes relaxation, helping individuals in Cairns manage the emotional stress that often accompanies chronic arthritis.

Acupuncture may be able to asssist with the pain and discomfort of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis can be seen to affect the joints especially of the lower body such as the lower back, hips and knees.

Osteoarthritis is often diagnosed in relation to the spine, hips and knees.  Acupuncturists have successfully treated this condition for many years using needles, moxibustion and chinese herbal medicine if it is indicated (and doesn’t interfere with the current medications your are taking.

In a normal joint the ends of the bones are covered in cartiliage to protect the bones.  These joints have fluid which also lubricates the joint…known as synovial fluid.  This fluid acts as a shock absorber to take the impact inside the joint and minimise the stress inside the joint.

When the synovial fluid becomes less and less it looses its ablility to absorb the impact inside the joint….and therefore be less able to act as a cushion.

After this occurs the cartilage at the ends of the bones becomes less and it wears away and occasionally means the bones themselves are exposed.

This set of circumstance may occur over time due to age, obesity, a small change in the bones of the joint, injury to the joint from sports, long term excessive wear and tear of the joints.  Any other accidents of injuries to the joints.

At times, pain that radiates from the back to the knee or hip may in fact be a joint problem, such as OA. Further workup should be done to try to rule out this source of pain.osteoarthri

Osteoarthritis mostly presents with the symptom of pain.  The condition may interfere with movement and may be present even at rest.  The sufferer may even loose some range of movement.  The joint may be stiff and swollen.  We can use acupuncture needles around the joint to increase the range of movement again, decrease the pain and inflammation.  We may suggest homework such as taping or body brushing around the joint.

The beginning of Cairns Acupuncture –

In 2008  Tanya traveled the world working as an Acupuncturist, hypnotherapist, kinesiologist, spa therapist and Massage therapist on Cruise Ships around the world for Royal Carribean and Princess Cruise lines.

After five promotions to bigger and better cruise ships as a reward for doing a great job she decided to settle back in Australia.  Acupuncture Stratford

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with Chinese herbal medicine, tui na (orthopedic massage) and Qi Gong (meditation and energy healing.)

With a history of almost 3000 years it is still used extensively today to treat literally millions of people around the world.

Acupuncture affects the physiological functioning of the body by the insertion of fine needles into particular reflex points all over the body.

How does acupuncture work?

Medically acupuncture works by regulating carious systems in the body – hormonal, nervous, immune, circulatory, muscular etc.

In traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture regulates the flow of qi (pronounced chee), a type of unseen energy or electromagnetic force traveling in a system of channels which connect acupncture points to tissues and organs.

Does it Hurt?

Most people are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable acupuncture therapy is, often falling asleep on the treatment table.

The needles are generally between 0.2 and 0.25mm in width.  Five of these fit in the bore of one hyperdermic needle….they are as fine as a human hair!

They are inserted quickly to minimize skin pain, and when correctly stimulated, there is a feeling of tingling, mild cramping or an electric sensation at the point.

How deep the needles are inserted varies from a few millimetres to a couple of inches or more depending on the size of the patient and where the point lies on the body.
